WEBINAR: Improving Investment Casting Processes With 3D Printed Stereolithography Patterns

Investment casting is one of the oldest metal-forming techniques that is still around today. Indeed, in 2021 it was estimated to be worth $15.83 billion by Grand View Research and is only expected to grow. Moreover, like all techniques, it is constantly evolving to suit the needs of the current era. In 3Dnatives’ webinar, “Improving Investment Casting Processes With 3D Printed Stereolithography Patterns,” which took place on April 27th at 4PM CEST (10AM EDT), we focused on one of these evolutions. Or more specifically, we took a look at how 3D printed stereolithography (SL) patterns can be used to improve this process.

During the webinar, we learned more about the advantages of using SL 3D printing patterns over traditional production. We covered not only the potential pitfalls associated with the investment casting process, but also how to overcome them. Furthermore, experts from both Materialise and Stratasys joined us in order to demonstrate how users can repeatedly achieve best-in-class 3D printed patterns using resin 3D printing.

Attendees were able to gather more in-depth knowledge on a number of topics including (but certainly not limited to): gaining knowledge from experts from Materialise and Stratasys about investment casting, how to use SL patterns, and explore whether this process will serve your specific needs; discovering how the solutions presented will bring benefits to every step of your process, delivering high quality and precise 3D-printed casts; tips on the best design for SL patterns, focusing on tetra lattices as they can reduce weight and material costs; and finally how to optimize support structure to reduce prep time, minimize error and simplify post-processing by automating support generation. Eric Yeung is a specialist in photopolymer and metal additive manufacturing technologies, working within the AM industry for more than 10 years for companies such as 3D Systems. With a Mechanical Engineering background and MBA degree from University of Southern California, Eric is the AMERs Commercial Leader for P3 and stereolithography technologies at Stratasys, and he works with a variety of resin manufacturers providing additive manufacturing solutions to customers.

Scott Nordlund has supported many challenging new applications in the 3D Printing industry for the past 18 years. His passion for working with materials started at Purdue University where he received his degree in Chemical Engineering. Scott went on to further develop his work experience with engineered materials in the automotive and packaging markets. As a member of the Somos® team, Scott participates in many major 3D Printing events to support and develop this very exciting industry.

Lieve Boeykens holds a master’s degree in physics as well as a degree in biomedical and clinical engineering from KU Leuven. Since 1996, she has been the driving force behind many go-to-market strategies and innovation programs at Materialise. Her passion for exploring new markets and applications is visible in the diverse portfolio of products she has spearheaded. Over the years she served the company in various positions both in product as in and sales management.

Some years ahead and actively working in the Additive Manufacturing industry, Jeremy mastered the art of DLP, SLA, and SLM technologies and he is an e-stage (automation in support generation) expert. Working closely with customers, Jeremy uses his unique combination of technical expertise and communication skills to train engineers to get the most out of their 3D printing technologies by discovering, employing, and optimizing their use of software solutions, workflows, and/or applications.
